When Should You Replace Your AC Instead of Repair It? A Homeowner's Guide

Living in Southwest Florida means your AC runs almost year-round. That kind of demand puts serious wear on a system — and at some point, every homeowner faces the same question: do I fix it again, or is it time to replace it?

Here's how I walk customers through that decision every day.

The $5,000 Rule

Multiply your system's age by the repair cost. If that number is over $5,000, replacement usually makes more financial sense. For example: a 10-year-old unit with a $600 repair = $6,000. That's a strong indicator it's time to move on.

Age of the System

Most AC systems in Florida last 12–15 years with proper maintenance — sometimes less if they ran hard without tune-ups. If your unit is over 10 years old and breaking down, you're likely throwing money at a system that's on its way out anyway.

Under 10 years old: Repair is almost always the right call, unless it's a major component failure (compressor, coil).

10–15 years old: Evaluate cost of repair vs. replacement. Efficiency gains from a new system may offset the investment quickly in our climate.

Over 15 years: Replacement is typically the smarter move.

R-22 Refrigerant (Freon)

If your system uses R-22 refrigerant, that's a major red flag. R-22 has been phased out and is extremely expensive when available — sometimes $100+ per pound. If your older system needs refrigerant, the cost of charging it can approach the cost of a new system. We recommend replacing R-22 systems rather than continuing to repair them.

Frequent Breakdowns

One repair per year is normal. Two or more repairs in a 12-month period is a pattern — and patterns don't fix themselves. If you're calling for service every few months, the money you're spending on repairs would be better applied toward a new, reliable system.

Rising Electric Bills

Older, struggling AC units have to work harder to cool your home. That means higher electric bills even when nothing has "broken." If your utility costs have climbed without explanation, your AC efficiency is likely dropping. A new high-efficiency system can cut cooling costs significantly.

Comfort Issues That Won't Resolve

If certain rooms are always too warm, humidity feels uncontrollable, or the system runs constantly without reaching your set temperature — those are signs the system is either undersized or worn out. Repairs won't fix a fundamental capacity problem.

The Bottom Line

There's no one-size-fits-all answer, but the decision comes down to this: stop spending money on a system that can't reliably do its job. A new system installed correctly will run efficiently for 15+ years in our Florida climate with proper maintenance.

If you're unsure whether your system is worth repairing, give us a call. I'll give you an honest assessment — no upsells, no pressure. Just the facts so you can make the right call for your home and budget.
