Late July in Bonita Springs, first visit on a new maintenance membership, and the homeowner told me the air conditioner needed service. No dramatic breakdown, no water on the floor, just a system that was not doing its job the way it used to. Those are the calls where it pays to slow down, because the easy answer is almost never the right one.
When a system is running but not performing, most people assume refrigerant. It is the first thing the internet tells them and it is the first thing a lot of companies want to sell. Refrigerant is a closed loop though. If it is low, there is a leak, and the honest move is to find the leak instead of pouring in a pound and driving off. On this system that is not where the trail led.
The problem was airflow, and the culprit was the blower. The blower wheel sits inside the air handler and its job is to move conditioned air through the ductwork and out to your rooms. It is built with a ring of small curved blades, and every one of those blades has to stay clean to grab air. In Southwest Florida those blades pick up a film of dust, and in a humid house that film turns into a crust. Once it builds up, each blade stops behaving like a blade. The wheel keeps spinning at the same speed, the motor keeps drawing power, the thermostat keeps calling, but far less air is actually moving. From inside the house it feels exactly like a system that is losing its cooling power, which is why so many homeowners get talked into refrigerant they did not need.
You cannot clean a blower wheel properly by reaching in with a rag through the access panel. It has to come out. So I pulled the blower assembly, cleaned the wheel and the housing, and reinstalled it. That is real labor and it is not glamorous, but it is the difference between a system that moves the air it was designed to move and one that has been quietly choking for a couple of seasons.
While I was in the air handler I also replaced two UV bulbs. This is one of the most common things I find on systems that have UV, and homeowners are usually surprised by it. A UV bulb does not have to burn out to stop working. The germicidal output drops off well before the bulb goes dark, so you can look at a glowing purple bulb and think everything is fine while it is doing almost nothing to control mold and bacteria in the air handler. The manufacturers say replace them every one to two years and I agree with that. On this system it was time.
Because the homeowner was on our maintenance plan, both the blower service and the bulbs came off with the member discount applied. That is the part of the plan people underestimate. The $199 a year covers two inspections, but the 15% off repairs and the $89 diagnostic instead of $109 tend to pay for the plan on the first real repair.
The takeaway for Bonita Springs homeowners is to stop treating weak cooling as automatically a refrigerant problem. Ask your tech what the airflow looks like and when the blower wheel was last cleaned. Change your filter on schedule, because a cheap filter that is past due lets dust straight onto that wheel, and a filter jammed with dirt starves the system just as badly. If your system has a UV light, write the install date on the housing with a marker so you are not guessing about the bulb two years from now.
