A thermostat is the cheapest part of your air conditioning system and the one everybody blames first. Sometimes that is right. Often it is not, and knowing the difference before you spend money is the whole point of this page.

When It Actually Is the Thermostat

  • Blank or dead display with the breaker on and fresh batteries in
  • Screen works but the system never responds to a setpoint change
  • The room feels nothing like the number on the wall, consistently, in both directions
  • Short cycling that follows the thermostat rather than the equipment
  • A smart thermostat that keeps losing wifi or rebooting itself

When It Is Not, and What It Usually Is Instead

Warm air coming out of the vents with the thermostat set correctly is almost never the thermostat. That is refrigerant, a capacitor, a contactor or a compressor. A system that shuts off on its own on a hot afternoon is usually a clogged drain line tripping the float switch, which is doing exactly what it is designed to do. A system that runs constantly and never satisfies is undersized, low on charge, or losing its output into the attic through leaky duct.

Replacing a thermostat in any of those situations costs you money and changes nothing. If what you are describing sounds like one of those, book an AC repair diagnostic instead and we will find the real thing.

Smart Thermostats and the C-Wire Problem

Most smart thermostats need constant power, which comes from a common wire, and plenty of Southwest Florida homes built before the mid two thousands do not have one run to the thermostat. That is the single most common reason a self-installed smart thermostat behaves strangely, drops off wifi, or drains the system.

There are three ways out of it: run a proper common wire, use an add-a-wire adapter at the air handler, or pick a thermostat that does not need one. Which is right depends on what is in your wall and what the air handler board supports. We check before we quote.

One more thing worth knowing. If you have a variable speed or communicating system, it likely needs its own matched thermostat and a generic smart model will either cripple it or not work at all. Do not let a big box store sell you one for that system.

We confirm what is actually wired at the wall and at the air handler, install the thermostat, set the equipment type and staging correctly, run the system through cooling and heating to verify every stage responds, and set it up on your wifi if it is a smart model. Then we show you how to use it, because a thermostat nobody understands gets set to 68 and left there.

Thermostat work is billed at the standard $109 residential diagnostic, credited toward the work when we do it, plus the thermostat itself.
