What a UV System Actually Does
A UV lamp mounted in the air handler runs continuously on the coil and drain pan. It keeps biological growth from establishing on the wet surfaces inside your system. That is the job it does well, and it is a real one, because a coil with growth on it moves less air, drains worse and smells.
Here is what it does not do, and you should hear this from a contractor rather than find out later. A UV lamp is not a substitute for cleaning a coil that is already dirty, and it will not fix a clogged drain line. If your system needs a real cleaning, we do that first and then talk about UV. Installing a lamp over a filthy coil is selling you a light bulb.

Who This Is Actually For
The homeowners who get the most out of it are the ones with a specific problem, not the ones buying a gadget. Musty smell when the system kicks on. Allergy or asthma symptoms that get worse indoors. Humidity Is the Other Half of This
Air quality problems in this climate are usually humidity problems wearing a costume. An oversized air conditioner cools the house fast, shuts off before it has pulled much moisture out of the air, and leaves you at 60 percent indoor humidity feeling clammy with a perfectly functional AC. That is a sizing and equipment problem, not a filter problem. If that is what is going on, a variable speed system that runs longer at lower capacity fixes it, and we would rather point you there than sell you a purifier that will not help. How the Visit Works
Most UV installs are a single visit. We shut the system down, mount the lamp where it actually covers the coil rather than wherever is easiest to reach, wire it to the air handler so it runs whenever the system does, verify operation, and show you where the lamp is and when it needs replacing. Lamps are consumable. We tell you the interval up front so it is not a surprise in two years.
If we are already there for a tune-up or maintenance visit, this is usually a good time to do it, since the system is open anyway.
